What happened with 10DLC?
10DLC (10-digit long code) is a messaging format introduced by mobile carriers in the United States to regulate Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging. It went into effect in the first quarter of 2021, with phased implementations and increased blocking of non-compliant numbers in subsequent years.
The progression of 10DLC in blocking unregistered phone numbers has been as follows:
- Initial implementation (Q1 2021): Mobile carriers started requiring businesses to register their brand and campaign information for sending A2P messages using 10-digit long codes.
- Increased filtering (Q2-Q3 2021): Carriers began to filter and block messages from unregistered 10DLC numbers more aggressively. This led to a higher volume of blocked messages for unregistered brands and campaigns.
- Stricter enforcement (Q4 2021 - 2022): Mobile carriers further tightened their filtering algorithms and increased the penalties for non-compliance. Unregistered 10DLC numbers faced a higher risk of being blocked or having their messages delayed.
- Ongoing monitoring and updates (2023 and beyond): Carriers continue to monitor 10DLC traffic and update their policies to combat spam and maintain a clean messaging ecosystem. Unregistered numbers are likely to face persistent blocking and other penalties.
- As of May 20, 2024, Vonage has blocked all unregistered SMS traffic. Customers who have not registered will no longer be able to send SMS messages through the Vonage platform.
- By December 2024, any non-compliant phone numbers on any provider will no longer be able to send SMS text messages.
To avoid disruptions in their messaging services, businesses are required to register their brand, obtain a trust score, and register their messaging campaigns with the carriers. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in messages being blocked, delayed, or filtered by the carriers.
